Of the many benefits of CBD, the use of CBD oil for pain management is perhaps one of the most talked about.
CBD (cannabidiol) is steadily gaining popularity as a safe, natural, and potentially effective approach to pain relief. And while it’s not a miracle cure-all, there is quite a bit of evidence that suggests it’s an incredibly promising alternative treatment, particularly for aging individuals and those dealing with chronic pain.
Here’s what to know, including why you might want to work a full or broad spectrum CBD tincture into your routine if you’re looking for sustainable relief from everyday pain.
The Science Behind CBD for Pain
Like all of CBD’s uses and benefits, we still have a lot to learn about exactly how it does what it does. But in terms of its use as a completely natural alternative treatment for common pain conditions—including arthritis, joint pain, and muscle soreness—there is some scientific evidence that helps shine a light on why it might be so effective.
To date, most of the studies on CBD oil for joint pain and other pain-related conditions have been animal-based—a fact that has less to do with overall confidence in CBD’s properties and more to do with the simple reality that, until the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD was still considered a Schedule-I substance.
While there’s a lot of catching up to do, early reports are encouraging. In 2017, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a paper on the health effects of cannabis and cannabinoids and stated that there was “conclusive or substantial” evidence of the ability of cannabis compounds to treat chronic pain. And a 2018 review in Frontiers in Pharmacology declared CBD to be effective in pain management for conditions ranging from neuropathic pain to fibromyalgia.
Later, in 2019, a research paper published in PAIN found that, in a controlled study, patients with chronic pain experienced a 30% decrease in pain scores compared to a placebo group when taking a CBD and THC inhalant.
More research is ongoing, but there are already a lot of people relying on CBD oil and other CBD products (including THC-free varieties) to address their pain conditions—and many of them are finding success.
CBD’s Use as an Alternative Therapy for Pain Management
CBD’s non-habit forming properties and its purported ability to reduce pain and inflammation make it an attractive option for those who don’t want to rely on OTC or prescription painkillers.
Some of the pain conditions that CBD is most commonly used to potentially help treat include:
- Joint and muscle aches
- Cancer-related pain
Important to note is that the treatment method used is important. For example, when it comes to relief from joint and muscle pain, such as after a workout, CBD oil or salves applied directly to the affected area seem to be the most effective. Meanwhile, more chronic, widespread types of pain are better treated with ingested CBD, which passes through the digestive system into the bloodstream.
Also important is dosage. At this time there are no recommended dosage guidelines for using CBD to treat pain, and finding the right fit is often an individual endeavor. CBD is considered safe, however, so starting with a low dose and gradually increasing to find relief is a good way to go.
Should You Try CBD for Pain Relief?
That’s up to you! Some things to keep in mind is that there are a variety of consumption methods out there (including oils, edibles, and capsules), and you may need to do some trial and error to find what you like and what offers you the most benefits. Consider the type of CBD extract too, and look for full or broad spectrum varieties that don’t contain additional ingredients.
Quality is also key. When you’re shopping for a CBD oil tincture online or in stores, stick to brands that use natural ingredients grown in the USA, as well as those that conduct a third party lab test on their products for safety and transparency. CBD for pain has minimal or no side-effects, but if you’re not buying from a trusted source you can’t be quite as sure about what you’re getting.
At Trust Wellness, we’re committed to creating CBD products that you can feel good about. Try our 100% THC-free Premium CBD Oil Drops, which are triple lab tested to ensure quality and consistency with every use.
